Lei Pîkake - by Barry Flanagan & Kiope Raymond

Māpu ʻia ke ʻala o ka pīkake
I ka ō aheahe a ka makani

Hui:
Aloha aʻe au i ka pua ʻumeʻume mau

ʻAko au i nēia pua aloha
I poina ʻole ʻia ai a he launa ʻole

ʻOhuʻohu hoʻi pili i ka puʻuwai
He lei hoʻolei aʻe pūlama

Puana ʻia mai koʻu manaʻo
He lei pīkake kuʻu aloha

Puana hou ʻia mai koʻu manaʻo
He lei pīkake kuʻu aloha

The fragrance of the pīkake is wafted
By a gentle blowing of the wind

Chorus:
I love the flower that constantly attracts

I pluck this flower of my attraction
It will never be forgotten, second to none

Elegant and close to my heart
A lei to wear and cherish

An echo of my thoughts
A pikake lei is my love

Echoing again
A pīkake lei is my love

Source: M. Leong Collection - Pīkake was the Hawaiian name for Princess Kaʻiulani's beloved peacocks. She was also fond of the jasmine and this flower, introduced about 1860, was called pīkake in her honor. The fragrant pīkake lei was known as the twilight or evening lei because it is strung in the evening.
