Kumukahi - Grace McBride & J. Kaaua

Kilakila ʻo Puna ua kaulana
I ka hale ipu kukui aʻo Kumukahi

ʻAkahi hoʻi au a ʻike maka
I ka ʻōlapa kauila puni o Puna

No Puna ke ʻala i hali ʻia mai
E kono mai ana iaʻu e naue aku

E naue ka hoa e kuʻu aloha
Ke ʻike i ka nani aʻo Koaʻe

Haʻina ʻia mai ana ka puana
I ka hale ipu kukui aʻo Kumukahi

Puna is majestic in fame
For the lighthouse of Kumukahi

For the first time I beheld
The lightning flashes surrounding Puna

From Puna comes the fragrance borne
Inviting me to motion

My love, the friend who moves (me)
To see the beauty of Koaʻe

Tell the refrain of my song
For the lighthouse of Kumukahi

This cape may have been named for a chief that ridiculed Pele, causing her to send waves of lava that enveloped him and formed the cape. An older legend remembers Kumukahi as coming from Kahiki with his two wives, who caused the seasons to change by pushing the sun back and forth between them. This was also a place of healing for sun worshippers. Verse 4, stanza 2, Koaʻe is a village in the Puna district.
